Visiting Britain's Historic Capital City

Dec 11th, 2011 Joanna Lawton

London is a fantastic place to visit, as tourist it has absolutely everything you could possibly want to do and see. Let's start with a brief history of English capital. London is an ancient city and the precise origin of its name is a subject of debate. Some believe it is named for King Lud, who ruled the city prior to medieval times and some think it is from the early Welsh 'lyndon', meaning shadow water (describing the Thames). The most popular theory is that the Romans named the place 'Londinium' when they settled, and that the name stuck, but altered slightly over time.

As the centuries passed by London began to expand and as it grew so did its population and popularity. The smaller surrounding towns and villages were soon swallowed up and became part of what it now known as Greater London. For those who haven't visited this city, they will be amazed at the wealth of culture, architecture and green parks that one of the largest cities in Western Europe boasts.

When planning your visit, you will need to find the best or most affordable hotel rooms London has to offer. You will be presented with a wealth of choice and should choose wisely so that you can enjoy all that this city has to offer as conveniently as possible.

You may be lucky enough to check into one of the many hotel rooms London has to offer and see one of the many famous London landmarks from your bedroom window. This could be Big Ben, the Houses of Parliament or even Buckingham Palace. In fact a great way to see London is to walk the Royal Parks. Yes, this is quite a feat and you may want to spread it over two days, but there is no better way to see some of the sights that London has to offer from the green splendour of the Royal Parks.

When selecting your hotel rooms London from those online, try to establish as to whether the hotel is close to an underground station as this will be the quickest and easiest way for you to traverse the city. Plus you will get to ride the "tube" as it is better known - do try and avoid rush hour though as this will probably hamper your experience a little!

Leaving your hotel rooms London and setting out on a tour of London is great fun, all you'll need is a map and vague idea of what you would like to see. You will find, especially if you remain central, that you will be able to wander from landmark to landmark and even take in the famous Globe theatre down on the South Bank of the Thames. From here you will see the Mayor's building and then over the river by the famous Tower Bridge you will see the historic Tower of London, a great place to visit to really immerse yourself in the history of this ancient city.

Selecting the best hotel rooms London has to offer can be tricky and as always you should book early to avoid disappointment, stick to a budget and give yourself a good amount of spending money as London, like most capital cities, is expensive.
