Celebrate The Fourth of July in South East Florida's City of Naples
It's not too late to plan a Fourth of July celebration in South West Florida. Why not celebrate the birth of the United States of America by vacationing in the beautiful city of Naples. Just as darkness falls on this great holiday, fireworks will erupt in a fabulous show of bursting blooms and exploding glittering stars.
Naples is located in Collier County, Florida, USA. Boasting a population of about twenty-two thousand residents, it has all the sights, sounds and amenities that will guarantee you a terrific holiday.
Tourism is what drives the economy, and it is an industry that is practiced with much finesse. The city was founded in 1880s by a former general, U.S. Senator John Stuart Williams, and Walter N. Haldeman, who published the Louisville Courier-Journal.
These two partners loved the area and weren't shy about advertising its virtues in print. Soon folks were flocking to the area, intent on experiencing the sunshine, agreeable temperatures, fantastic hunting, and fishing for themselves.
The name Naples really took hold as more and more visitors and promoters favorably compared the lovely bay to its counterpart in Naples, Italy. Together with Marco Island and the Everglades, these three tourist destinations comprise the Paradise Coast.
If you are traveling from areas in the United States or Canada, it is possible to plan an excursion by car, join up with Highway I75, and head south to Florida. From some northern states and southern Ontario it can be about twenty-four hours of driving. However the highway is in great shape with lots of convenient rest stops.
One solution is to keep rotating drivers, or if you prefer, pull into one of the many hotels or motels along the way. If driving is not your cup of tea, book a flight. Southwest Florida International Airport in Fort Myers is the main access by air. It served about eight million passengers in 2008, and is now one of the top fifty busiest airports in the U.S.
If it's sparkling water, balmy breezes and white sand that you crave, you have hit the jackpot. The travel channel, in 2005, voted Naples as the best beach in America. With over ten miles of clean white sand, it will be easy to find a private spot to plant your beach umbrella. Then, with water tickling your toes and the kids building sand castles, you can crack open that book you've waited so long to read.
Later on, head to the Fifth Avenue South, or 3rd Street South shopping areas to check out the antiques. The Village on Venetian Bay is great for a real Floridian outdoor spending spree. If you have lots of fee time, browse through the many art galleries on Gallery Row where local artists proudly show their work.
When the kids get restless, visit one of the many land reserves to catch a glimpse of real Florida wildlife - egrets, turtles and alligators. Don't miss taking a walk along the two and a half mile boardwalk that winds through Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary. The historic Naples Zoo is another excellent spot for the whole family to enjoy.
Just when you thought the fun would never stop, there's more. Three times every year there are swamp buggy races staged at the Florida Sports Park. If you come in the spring, catch the Minnesota Twins and the Boston Red Sox gearing up for the baseball season. In summer the Fort Myers Miracle and another single-A team called the Boston Red Sox play in nearby Fort Myers.
If you've worked through the whole list of things to do in Naples and area, and are running out of ideas, don't worry. Naples calls itself the "Golf Capital of the World", so start sampling the eighty or more excellent courses in the area. You might have to save some for your next visit.
